Soaring Melodies to Lift the Spirit and Touch the Heart
Soprano Kathy Soroka and members of the Pittsburgh Symphony performed a Classical Pops Program of stirring and poignantly beautiful pieces from opera, sacred music, musical theater, movies, and classical works by Dvorak, Strauss and Canteloube.
PSO members Louis Lev, violin, and Michael Lipman, cello, joined Kathy in vocal chamber music selections and perform solo instrumental classics including The Meditation from Thaïs by Massenet and The Swan from The Carnival of Animals by Saint Saëns.
Oboist, Dr. Brent Register from Clarion University, performed Gabriel’s Oboe from The Mission and joined Kathy and her husband, John Soroka, former PSO Principal Percussionist, in two Songs from the Auvergne by Canteloube.
The young and very talented Tenor William Strom, known for his roles in recent years with Undercroft Opera, was featured in Bring Him Home from Les Misérables and the opera aria Amor ti vieta from Fedora.
Popular favorites Kathy Soroka performed included Allegheny Moon, Blue Moon, Time to Say Goodbye, The Prayer, You’ll Never Walk Alone from Carousel, and Moonfall from The Mystery of Edwin Drood; from the sacred music repertoire, Ave Maria and The Lord’s Prayer; and Song to the Moon from the opera, Rusalka.
Glorious vocal chamber music classics featuring Louis Lev and Michael Lipman included Richard Strauss’ Morgen, and Beim Schlafengehen from his Four Last Songs, Dvorak’s Songs My Mother Taught Me including the virtuosic Fritz Kreisler Gypsy Melodies transcription, and Jose Maria Cano’s haunting Epilogo from the opera Luna.
A meet-the-artist reception followed in the Red Brick Gallery where the exhibit of Master Weaver, Sigrid Piroch, is on display on the second floor.
