Sweet Sugar Maple! It’s A Syrup Festival!

In just a couple of short weeks, the town of Foxburg will be holding it’s first Maple Syrup Festival. Which promises to be a truly sweet event.
Businesses around town will each be hosting some sort of unique and tasty manifestation originating from the majestic maples that so heavily populate our beloved Allegheny Clarion Valley!
Along with our current maple inspired confections here at “the sweet shop on the block”, we will be filling our delicious Belgian chocolate “Maple Sap Buckets” with maple cream as well as serving special maple drinks, including Maple Latte and Maple Milkshakes! Yum!
Additionally, one of our very own local maple syrup men, David Yeany, will be demonstrating the art of creating the delectable maple cream that will be in our chocolate buckets!
On a side not, in case you’re a sucker for history like myself, did you know that Native Americans living in the northeastern part of North America were the first groups known to have produced maple syrup and maple sugar? According to aboriginal oral traditions, as well as archaeological evidence, maple tree sap was being processed into syrup long before Europeans arrived in the region! Don’t take my word for it… there’s a great Wikipedia article which highlights more about maple syrup, if you’re interested!

Yeany’s Maple Creates a Sticky Situation in Foxburg

Yeany’s Maple is a family owned and operated maple producer located in downtown Marienville. In operation for 9 years now, they produce on average 1,000 gallons of syrup each year. Mr. Yeany tapped over 700 trees at the Riverstone Estate this year, and produced the syrup for the Maple Syrup Festival. Yeany’s will be providing all of the maple syrup and maple products for the festival this year. There will be a wide variety of maple confections to choose from including maple covered nuts, maple candies, maple cream, chocolate candy filled with maple cream, maple creamy(maple flavored soft serve), cotton candy and shaved ice. Don’t forget to pick up a bottle of locally tapped and produced syrup for on your pancakes or in your recipes.

Yeany and associates will also be giving various candy, cream and sugar making demonstrations throughout the day. See how maple sugar is made at the Allegheny Grille; watch them make maple cream at Divani Chocolate. Cool down with the ARCA members and watch how maple creamys are made, you will not be able to resist this frosty treat.

The Foxburg Maple Syrup Festival and Yeany’s Maple introduce The Maple Creamy. This delicious frosty treat is made with fresh maple syrup and soft serve ice cream. This is just one of the many maple flavored treats you will find at the festival. Others include maple sugar, maple covered nuts, maple cream, maple candies, maple flavored cotton candy and shaved ice.

Watch how maple sugar and maple candies are made at The Allegheny Grille on the festival day. There will also be a maple cream making demonstration at Divani Chocolatier.

To welcome the grace and beauty of spring with an emphasis of the newest of new begins, this month’s Featured Artist is one who finds inspiration in our youth. Children, captured through the lens of Sonya Porter Weaver’s camera, are artfully conveyed in their day to day liveliness. In her own words she says, “As a photographer and artist, I believe that capturing the simplicity of our future is essential. Earning a child’s trust and learning their personality helps me to embrace their glory and wonder.

Photography began for me as a child. For whatever reason, it always lingered within. When I entered high school the mystery began to unfold. I could explore with a camera the most mundane of objects and the various personalities of subjects. I could set the mood however I wanted with lighting and composition. I could bring forth the endless idiosyncrasies of our world. As time went on and I worked my way through college, photography was not only an outlet but became a second language. I find inspiration for portraiture in my childhood memories, my daily life, and most of all I find it in my children.”

Friends and family of local resident Doug Yingling are hosting a benefit BINGO on Wednesday, July 18, 2012. Doug has recently been diagnosed with cancer, so please come and help support this family. All proceeds will go to Doug to help with the cost of treatment, travel, medications and other expenses. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Doug and his wife, Janet in this difficult time. There will also be a Chinese auction, raffle tickets, hamburgers, hot dogs, pasta salad and more. Bring your sweet tooth because you can purchase homemade desserts too.

We were informed that the venue is making adjustments so they may schedule this event sooner. We will update the information as soon as it becomes available.

Why do we eat Easter Chocolate?

So many people have asked this question before that when I finally asked, and pursued an answer, I found a plethora of interesting facts, stories, a myth! So what is the question? Why do we eat chocolate bunnies and eggs at Easter time?

The short of it is that the tradition of exchanging chocolates and other sweets at Easter began to flourish in France and Germany during the 19th century. Symbols associated with springtime, such as the ever popular egg, date back to pagan times and were considered universal symbols of rebirth, rejuvenation and immortality. Another “famous” symbol is the Easter Bunny. The earliest mention of the mythical humanoid rabbit who brings baskets of colored eggs and goodies to children, dates to the 1600s in Alsace and southwestern Germany. Like the history of the Easter egg, the concept of rabbits and hares as symbols of springtime, rebirth and fertility goes back to pagan times. Germans also were those responsible for starting the tradition of hiding Easter eggs, and were the first to create edible Easter Bunnies in the early 1800s.

Hmmm, interesting. Now let’s change the emphasis here just a tad… So, why do we eat chocolate at Easter time? I don’t know about you all, but I myself sure do have a lot of German ancestry, for a start. (Maybe that’s also why I make chocolate!)Yet the most basic and forthright answer just might be that we love it so much!

Oh, and if you’re looking for something fun to do the day before Easter, we will be hosting a good old fashioned Easter egg hunt in the garden behind Divani Chocolatier and Barista, our chocolate shop in Foxburg. Kids 10 years old and younger are invited. Toddlers of walking age may be accompanied by a parent. The hunt will begin at 11 am and end when all the eggs are found! There will be prizes inside the eggs, so be sure to find them all!

Deadline to Register for Birdfest Has Been Extended

To give birders more time to plan, we have changed the deadline for registration for Foxburg’s bird watching weekend from April 2, 2012 to April 21, 2012. The schedule of events are as follows:

On Saturday there will be an 8:00am birding tour and lunch at the historic Riverstone Estate in Foxburg (handicap accessible-cost is $20.00), a 5:00 pm buffet dinner at the Allegheny Grille followed by educational presentations by Seneca Rocks Audubon Society member Michael Leahy and keynote speaker Jason Hill. Cost of the dinner is $26.40. The Riverstone Estate will be hosting an Owl Prowl at 8:00pm for a fee of $5.00.

On Sunday there will be an 8:00 am birding tour of Mount Zion/Piney Tract Important Bird Area near Sligo, PA. This event is FREE.

Birders staying at the Foxburg Inn Hotel will receive special lodging rates. Tickets can be purchased by contacting the hotel at 724-659-3116. Also you may email Kirsten with any questions you may have at kwilliams@foxburginn.com.

Gayle Martin Henry Performs at Lincoln Hall

Allegheny RiverStone Center for the Arts is pleased to announce the performance on Sunday April 1st of indeed another recognized world class musician, the pianist Gayle Martin Henry. She comes to Foxburg and Lincoln Hall at 2:00 PM in the midst of a mid-western tour. ARCA appreciates the significance of the quality and beauty of sound she brings to the Allegheny Clarion Valley and is enthusiastic about her appearance as part of ARCA’s upcoming Spring concerts.

Gayle Martin Henry has had a distinguished career as a concert pianist, achieving international prominence as the sole American laureate of the sixth International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow, and only the third American woman ever to reach the finals.

In reviewing her solo Alice Tully Hall concert at Lincoln Center, The New York Concert Review reported that she created “a truly magical atmosphere… and made this listener smile with pleasure.” Following her performance last October of the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto with the Ridgefield Symphony, the critic Courtenay Cauble wrote, “Gayle Martin Henry has it all. The depth of feeling is always there…because she makes the music her own and then communicates it, as any real artist must learn to do. Her performance was both brilliant and moving, and always beautiful.”

She on occasion performs with the exciting concert oboist, Gerard Reuter, playing transcriptions of opera and songs ranging from Mozart to Sondheim to Wagner, and has toured with the Dorian Wind Quintet.

A native Texan, Gayle Martin Henry was one of the very last students of the famous pedagogue Mme. Rosina Lhevinne at the Juilliard School, where she was awarded the prestigious Josef Lhevinne Prize. She holds the M.A. degree from New York University.

Her lyrical and engaging program will include compositions of Debussy, Beethoven, Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Chopin, and Villa-Lobos. Her spirited and subtle interpretation is expected to captivate all. Plan to attend for a refreshing Spring moment of the heart and soul.

Foxburg Maple Syrup Festival

The date for the Foxburg Maple Syrup Festival has been changed to April 28, 2012.

Join us in the beautiful downtown Foxburg for sweet treats, a hearty pancake breakfast and plenty of fun activities for all ages.

There will be demonstrations, games, food and entertainment. We will have a variety of maple products available for purchase from Yeany’s Maple. Mr. Dave Yeany has been a Maple Producer for 9 years and is located in downtown Marienville.

Sled Dog “Scoot” in Foxburg

The first annual Riverstone Sled Dog Race, as part of Foxburg’s Winterfest, Saturday, February 4th turned into a sled dog “scoot” instead. The fickle and unusually mild winter this region is experiencing left the ground brown and bare with no snow to be found. Undaunted, mushers, barking dogs, interested and curious spectators braved the cloudy day with temperatures above freezing to be part of the day’s events.

With no snow, the activities moved downtown to the Foxburg bike trail. Mushers, led by Parker’s own Dennis Alworth, did their best to explain, above the barking chorus, sled dog etiquette and protocol. They demonstrated various commands, techniques and equipment used, including the over land sleds, which seemed out of place on the asphalt and stone. No matter, they hooked their dogs, many wearing booties, to wheeled devices, including what looked like an overgrown tricycle and off they mushed down the trail.
The mushers included Roger, Jim and Lee Carnahan, traveling from Clymer, Pa.; Sandy Stoner of Boyers and Cindy Eddy of Butler. The youngest musher was Julea Leasure, eleven years of age, who has been mushing since she was eight. Teams ranged from the expected Siberian Huskies to high spirited Red Irish Setters.

Spokesperson, Dennis Alworth, expressed satisfaction that the impromptu dry land event salvaged the day and appreciated the crowd who attended and made the effort worthwhile. Discussions are already underway for next year.

After the “scoot”, attendees were invited to visit Foxburg. The mushers had a pizza party thanks to Foxburg Pizza and there was also old country bluegrass music at the Allegheny Grille.
