The Labor Day weekend is past. Friday night high school football dominates the local scene but in two weeks another outdoor event will captivate the region. For the first time the America’s premier off-road racing series, for ATVs and motorcycles, comes to Foxburg, PA.
At the height of summer vacation season, OpenTable, the world’s leading provider of online restaurant reservations, has announced the 2013 Diners’ Choice Award winners for the Top 100 Scenic View Restaurants in the United States. These awards reflect the combined opinions of more than 5 million reviews submitted by verified OpenTable diners for more than 15,000 restaurants in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
The sound of a motor boat roaring up the river is the sound that you hear as you pass by the Emlenton I-80 Bridge, however, it’s not a motor boat but the sound of a high powered blaster.
Underneath the cocoon looking wrapper, bridge contractor, North Star Inc., has set up containment for steel blasting (removal of existing paint) and painting of the primer. They have begun blasting last week and are expected to continue for the next couple months.
There is agreement that in recent past decades the loss of jobs and population decline has left the upper Allegheny River Valley struggling to maintain economic health and growth. The oil wealth is history and the promise of natural gas development is still merely a promise for Venango and Clarion counties. Throughout the area there are various business, government and civic groups including Economic Development Corporations, Chambers of Commerce and non-profit entities working diligently to collaborate and aid in the revitalization of the region.
The train turntable located just outside of Phillispton and along the Armstrong Trail is getting a much needed makeover. Site work began in the fall of 2011 when Armstrong Rails to Trails Association (ARTA) members Angie and Darwin Burtner began clearing the area around the turntable. The vegetation had hidden this old railroad gem for decades. Two years later the work continues.
The 2013 Emlenton Summer Festival once again set the stage for weekend entertainment July 12, 13, 14th. Nestled along the hills of Allegheny River, the quiet rivertown welcomed all as it showcased a spectacular fireworks show on Saturday, July 13th.
The 1st Annual Cool Cats and Hot Cars Classic Car Cruise Fundraiser for Tri-County Animal Rescue, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, no kill cat and dog facility in North Western Pennsylvania will be held on Sunday, July 21st.
The event will be held from noon to 6 pm at the historic Anchor Village in Clarion County, six miles off of Interstate 80 (exit 60 – Shippenville, PA).
Vehicle registration is from 10 am to Noon. Free dash plaques to the first 50 registered.
Foxburg: There is a different look in downtown Foxburg. The Red Caboose a reminder of Foxburg’s rail history has been moved from its familiar parking lot location to a new location closer to the starting point of Allegheny Valley Rails to Trails bike trail heading south towards Parker. The moving of the Caboose is all part of a Trailhead enhancement project, in part funded by the state of Pennsylvania’s Greenways Block Grant Program. The project includes a new map and information kiosk, landscaping, signage, lighting, benches and bike racks.
Foxburg: The event director for the Grand National Cross Country (GNCC) Racing, Tim Cotter, in conjunction with Foxburg’s team leader Mike Vereb, held an informational meeting for the upcoming race at Foxburg’s RiverStone Farm in September. GNCC Racing is America’s Premier Off-Road Racing Series featuring both ATV and Motorcycle racing, Pro and Amateur racers compete in 70 different classes between the two groups.
Pictured are a few of the decorated bird houses that are up for auction. There are 24 bird houses that were pained and decorated by students at ACV High School. The bird houses are on display at the Foxburg Pizza and Country Store in Foxburg. A Chinese Auction is being held all week-long in celebration of the coming weekend’s “Naturefest” that is being held in Foxburg on May 4th and May 5th. You can buy your Chinese Auction tickets at the country store and put your ticket in your favorite bird house and you may just end up being its new owner.
