Every February 14, across the United States and in other places around the world, candy, flowers and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. But who is this mysterious saint, and where did these traditions come from? February has long been considered a month of romance. St. Valentine’s Day as we know it has roots and both Christian and ancient Roman traditions. One legend states that a Roman Emperor banned soldiers from marrying in the third century, but St. Valentine did not agree. He performed marriages in secret and was executed for his rebellion. Another version of events is that the holiday stems from the annual Pagan celebration named Lupercalia. During this ritual men stripped naked, grabbed goat or dog skinned whips and spanked young maidens in hopes of increasing their fertility. This was held every year on February 15 and remained well into the fifth century A.D.
No matter what you believe about the origins of the holiday, there is no question that it is a day for love and romance. It is a day of flowers, candy and dinner reservations. If you don’t already have plans made for Valentine’s day weekend, here is an idea; Come to Foxburg! You can have a romantic dinner for two at The Allegheny Grille, a bottle of your favorite wine from Foxburg Wine Cellars and chocolate treats from Divani Chocolate. Don’t want to drive back home?
